I started working on Businessman in my first year at the University of Washington, and it remains my proudest work. Jay-Z's "I'm not a businessman. I'm a business, man." inspired the theme, while Block Dude, on my TI-84 calculator, inspired the mechanics. I loved how Block Dude combined simple controls with engaging, non-trivial puzzles.
Businessman's development period lasted five months from October 2019 to February 2020, when I released it onto the App Store. I'll never forgot the elation of that moment, being able to share with my friends and family something representative of my love of games and what they've brought to my life. Working on the music and art while simultaneously learning C# and Unity for the first time was incredibly challenging, but the result showed me that I really wanted to pursue a career in games and programming.
Controls:
Move left/right
Pick up/drop filing cabinets and folders
Restrictions:
Businessman can only move up/down at most 1 filing cabinet/folder
Goals:
Bring the yellow folder into the building at the end of the level
The game's business and building theme helped me come up with new designs and mechanics, like having to bring the folder to the end of the level and adding construction site terrain that the player could go over and under.
There's something nice about making a cozy title screen.
